Balloon Hut Guide

- Facilities: Balloon Hut is positioned at about 1, 260 m on the edge of the tussock and beech forest in Kahurangi National Park. Managed by DOC with support from Waimea Tramping Club and Backcountry Trust, it offers 14 bunks in a serviced shelter warmed by a wood burner and fitted with mattresses and basic toilets. Originally built in 1963 to replace a 1909 miner’s hut, it was upgraded in 1995. Access is via the Lake Peel or Salisbury Lodge tracks.
