Built in the early 1970s and managed by DOC, this 26‑bunk shelter blends basic comforts—cooking, heating and mattresses—with a rugged volcanic setting. Accessible via a roughly 5‑hour tramp from Desert Road, it’s currently being replaced in collaboration with Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro to better reflect the park’s dual World Heritage values.
