  • Facilities: Lake Thomson Hut is positioned beside its namesake lake in remote western Fiordland, offering eight bunks in a modest, heated shelter with mattresses and basic non‑flush toilets. Built in 1953 using materials from a 19th‑century mica‑mining camp, it’s managed by DOC and maintained with support from the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation. Access follows the challenging George Sound Route, about 2½ hours from Lake Hankinson.
