- Facilities: Slaty Hut is tucked just below the bushline on the northern flank of Slaty Peak in Mount Richmond Forest Park. Managed by DOC, this modest alpine shelter offers six bunks warmed by a wood stove and basic non‑flush facilities, with tap water that must be boiled. Built in 1982 to replace an earlier hut, it lies along the Te Araroa Trail at about 1, 400 m elevation, reached via a marked alpine ridge route.
