Built by NZFS in the 1960s and expanded in the 1980s, it now offers eight bunks, simple heating, mattresses, and basic toilet and water facilities. Reaching it involves a demanding five‑hour tramp along the lower Whataroa River, with riverbed and bush travel before arriving at this remote refuge.
