Elk Knob (Watauga County, North Carolina) Climbing Notes

Ken Lumsden from UNITED STATES writes:

Elk Knob, Watauga County, NC, USA does not offer "climbing" per se. There is a well-graded trail from the parking lot to the peak (5,520 ft/1,682 m) with about 1,200 ft. (366 m) elevation gain in 1.9 mi. (3 km) to the top. A second trail, less well-graded, descends from the parking lot to the backcountry camping area. A third trail (recently completed) loops through the picnic area. Elk Knob is noted for its wide diversity of wildflowers due to its unique amphibolite soil conditions. Accommodations are 10 mi. (16 km) away in Boone, NC.
