It is located near Lake Cima d'Asta, at the foot of the south face of the peak of the same name. The refuge, in its original cube-shaped construction, was inaugurated in 1908; the most substantial expansion dates back to 1985. It is the starting point for ascents of Cima d'Asta and a stop on the Lagorai crossings.
