- Facilities: Mangahao Flats Hut rests beside the Mangahao River in Tararua Forest Park, offering a cozy refuge with heating and mattresses across its 16 bunks. Built in 1992 to replace the earlier Avalanche Flats Hut, it’s managed by the Manawatu Tramping & Ski Club and reached via a winding road past the Mangahao hydro station followed by a 5–6 hour tramp. Water must be boiled before use.
