Empress Hut Guide

- Facilities: Empress Hut sits at about 2, 472 m on the Empress Glacier beneath Aoraki/Mt Cook’s west face. Managed by DOC in partnership with the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, it offers 12 foam‑mattress bunks, solar lighting and basic water—ideal only for highly experienced alpinists. Built in 1994 to replace the original 1953 CMC shelter, it remains a remote, technical refuge in a dynamic glacial landscape.
