Built in 1959 by the NZ Forest Service, its quirky name recalls dogs lost to distemper among early deer cullers. The snug six‑bunk shelter offers basic comforts—mattresses, a wood fire and untreated stream water—reached via a steep 2‑hour descent from No Man’s Road.
