Built in the mid‑1970s to replace earlier Canterbury Mountaineering Club shelters, it sleeps 36 in two wings warmed by a wood stove. A radio links to the Visitor Centre, and its riverside setting at the Waimakariri–White confluence makes it a scenic base for Harman and Three Passes routes.
