Carkeek Hut Guide

- Facilities: Carkeek Hut is tucked at about 1, 064 m on a ridge above the Waiohine River in Tararua Forest Park. Built in 1962–63 by the NZ Forest Service as a six‑bunk deer‑culling shelter, it now offers simple comforts like a wood‑burner, mattresses and tank water (boil before use). Managed under DOC with volunteer care from ex‑NZFS teams, it remains one of the park’s most remote refuges.
