Muztagh Ata in Uygur language means "the father of Ice Mountains". It stands high above the plains of Western China close to Silk Road City, Kashgar. In appearance the mountain is broad and lofty with fairly easy angled flanks and it is regarded as an excellent high altitude climb that presents few technical difficulties. As such this peak is a perfect choice for mountaineers wishing to gain high altitude experience in the beautiful remote Pamier ranges. Muztagh Ata first gained the attention of climbers in 1891 when Sven Hedin, famous Swedish explorer, made a brief attempt. Later, the famous British explorer Eric Shipton made an serious attempt but failed because of deep snow at 7000m. Muztagh Ata was climbed first time by a huge Soviet-China team in 1956. Beletskiy was the formal leader and they used the west ridge. The average temperature is over 7200 meters can be as low as from -20°C to - 30°C. The best season for climbing is June to mid September. The ascent normally requires three high altitude camps above 5000m.Total vertical distance is about 3100m.
