Leatherneck Ridge Without a doubt one of the more brutal hikes in Southern California. Start Palm Springs Ariel Tramway parking lot 6:am. Hike up the Ridge and over to the tram finish 4:30pm. 7,300 feet elevation gain. 11/18/23. "Leatherneck Ridge from the Valley Station (Tram) parking lot." "...rate of climb around 1,500′ per mile — compared to about 850′ per mile on Skyline. So while Skyline climbs 2,000′ of additional vertical, it does so on a descent trail at a relatively moderate pace. On Leatherneck there is no trail, and little moderation, but there are some gorgeous views and great scrambling.
