Lake Peak climbers Notes
Trønd from UNITED STATES writes:
Easily accessible from its lower outcrop of Deception. Often wrongly referred to as a "peak" by locals. Only advice is to drop down to the Sky Line trail that circles the eastern side of the ridge between Lake Peak and Deception. Many follow the ridge line which is more dangerous, especially if not wearing proper footwear. My favorite was the guy in cowboy boots sliding around on his way over - seemingly oblivious to the cliff drop a few feet to the west of him.
Count on a five hour hike. Most people go up and down via Raven's Roost, but coming down the southern most ski run is also a good route. Great views of the desert and city below.
Beware weather can change quickly, come prepared - early September 2024 it was 90ºF in Santa Fe, a system moved in over Deception as we reached the top. Temps up there dropped all the way to 18ºF - then was back at around 55º fifteen minutes later when we got back below tree line. Fortunately, this was just clouds - most often these systems seem to have associated thunder and lightening... not worth going above tree line in.
