We attempted to hike to the cone peak yesterday, 7-2/22 and we failed to reach the summit. Around 4 miles in from Arnot Creek trailhead (taking Jenkins canyon trail at the junction) we left the trail to start a scramble attempt up the north side of the Dardanelles about a half mile east of the cone. It looked like a good route until around 8500’ when we were on very steep terrain with the earth disintegrating beneath our hands and feet. Alas we decided this route was too unstable and turned back to slide down the slope. We climbed the peak just to the north of the Dardanelles to gain a vantage point for plotting our next route which looks to be following the meadows up to the west of the cone and attempting to reach the ridge from that point. Any info from hikers is welcomed !
