Built in 1972 as a deer‑culler’s base and flown in by helicopter, it now serves trampers navigating the rugged inland route via Smoothwater and Kakapo creeks. The hut provides basic comforts—warmth, mattresses and untreated tap water—amid coastal forest and river flats.
