  • Facilities: Smyth Hut sits at about 685 m in the remote head of the Wanganui Valley, managed by the Department of Conservation. Built in 1974 as one of the last NZFS six‑bunk designs, it offers basic comforts like a wood‑burner, mattresses, non‑flush toilet and tap water (must be boiled). Rugged access via boulder‑strewn riverbeds and frequent slips demands alpine skills, while nearby hot pools reward the effort.
