Uluru is one of the most famous natural icons of Australia and a major tourist attractions. The giant, sandstone monolith rises majestically out of the plain. Climbing it can be a problem as it is generally preferred by the local aboriginal owner's if visitor's do not climb the peak, as it is sacred, although it is essential to check first with the local authorities to find out whether it is possible. The rock is 420 km southwest of Alice Springs and can be reached by air or coach.
