Refferred to by most Phoenix residents as "Red Mountain" this beautiful mountain is easily recognized by its prominent "nugget" on its western end and a lush green "prarie" atop its sheer 1000 foot faces. Easily visible on US60 east of Mesa Arizona, by looking north. The red-orange sandstone composition is common to most mountains in the Phoenix Area. Surrounding terrain sits at about 1500ft. with the top of the highest summit "nugget" at 2830ft. and the upper mesa at roughly 2400ft. Dont let the seemingly small total vertical gain of 1330ft fool you. This an EXTREMELY vertical mountain and careful navigation combined with 5.5 rated rock scrambling are required in places if you intend to make it to the very top. Cholla cactuses, Ocotillo and Saguaro abound. BRING A MULTI PLIER, as Cholla Cactuses can ruin your day VERY easily. Wear long pants regardless of temperatures due to the thorny foliage that dominates most every route up. Access is best gotten by travelling North on Power Rd. from US60, east of Mesa Arizona. After about 10 miles Power road turns and descend down a hill. Make a left on the dirt road at this bend. This brings you through the facilities at Granite Reef Damn. You must cross the (usually) dry Salt river and drive over a few bridges that span 2 canals. (Then take a left) This is a relatively well maintained dirt road. After driving up a small hill (to the right) you take a another right then a left for the last mile to the northerly pump house facility (fenced) on the surrounding desert prarie. The mountian will be unmistakably imposing to your right, towering up with majesty, waiting for you to challenge it. Be prepared and bring enough water for emergency situations. There are at least 3 established routes to the high mesa, and one to the summit.
