Basic Snow and Ice Climb
As its name implies, Icy Peak is a glacier-clad massif located inside the boundaries of North Cascades National Park. It is situated on the opposite side of the Nooksack Cirque from the more imposing Mt. Shuksan. Three small crags form a summit above the ice-covered mountain, with the Southeast Peak being slightly higher than the Northwest Peak (7062 ft). Icy Peak is often climbed in tandem with an ascent of nearby Ruth Mountain. The view from the summit of Ruth shows the chaotic jumble of ice of the Spillway Glacier at its best. The Spillway Glacier on Icy Peak is an example of an icefall glacier.Refer to Fred Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guide, Volume 3, for a listing of established climbing routes.
