With its unmistakable hat shape, Hårteigen is the undisputed king of Hardangervidda - the highest mountain plateau in northern Europe. Due to its location in the center of the plateau, the hike requires several days. Several unmanned tourist huts are available for sleep-over, thus tent is not required. But a hut key from the norwegian hiking association (DNT) is needed. General access is up a pass on the east side, which might call for ice-axe if there is snow in the pass. From halfway up the pass, the trail follows ledges that takes you onto the upper level of the mountain. These ledges are secured by ropes and wires. There is some exposure on the ledges, but the ropes are not necessary for the experienced hiker. There is an additional unmarked route up the south side of the mountain - to the right of the steep cliff bands. The crux is two class 3 moves (US rating) while moving around two corners. The view from the top is superior.
