Coropuna is the highest mountain in the Cordillera Occidental. It is an extinct volcano, with gently rising glaciated slopes. It is thought by many to be the easiest of the high Peruvian mountains, and its approach is equally easy, with a road running past the western base of the mountain. Its broad summit dome is topped by five peaks over 6,000 meters. Coropuna is roughly twenty miles southeast of Solimana, the second highest peak in the Cordillera. Solimana is a more jagged peak, and a more difficult ascent.
