Walk up
Mt. Colden is the tenth highest peak in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. It is situated between Mount Marcy and Algonquin Peak, New York's 2 highest mountains. Colden has numerous slides, some very recent. The slide on Colden's east face is a popular backcountry skiing/snowboarding destination. On its western face, a popular ravine/slide called the Trap Dike rises from beautiful Avalanche Lake to the summit. If no ice is present, climbing the Trap Dike without ropes is doable and a rewarding route up Colden. However, there are two trailed routes up Colden that can be hiked year-round. Climbed alone, it is a moderate day hike of between 11 and 16 miles round trip, depending on whether you approach the mountain from Heart Lake or Tahawus near Newcomb, respectively.
