Chilecito, 83 km (Famatina 50 km)
Basic Snow and Ice Climb
From La Rioja, capital of Province la Rioja, very good road 100 km to Chilecito, altitude about 1200, little town of perhaps 20-30'000 persons. Right North follow the road towards Tinogasta. After 20 km at Guandacol take left and follow the paved road until the end of the village of Famatina (Bus), about 1500m.Then there is a quite good unpaved 4x4 road until Mina la Mejicana (Gold, perhaps you need permit, perhaps road forbidden for cars) at 3700m (private mine, gold extracted until 5500). 42 km from Famatina (Corrales 16km, La Encrujicada + 16km, altitude about 2800). Theses places you can see on MS Encarta Atlas are not villages, there are only some isolated poor houses. The river coming from the Mine is full of sulfuric acid, VERY DANGEROUS. From the mine I could not go through the part where they work. I went, more or less on a path, right up left to a pass, 4200m.There you meet the 100-year old roasted Cable-Carril, 35 km, coming from Chilecito, use in the past for mining and later for tourism, until some accidents/death. From the pass follow a ridge, easy, sometimes exhausting stone /sand, sometimes going down a little. Last good flat place at 5400-5500m. Still follow the same direction, a little bit right of the ridge for not climbing, steeper than before. When you think you reach the summit you see the real summit 300m higher on the right, snow-fields to cross (can be Icy, crampons and Ice-Axe necessary, but no rope). 150-180 km away you see 6800m peaks Bonete and Pissis. Between thise peaks of the Andes and Sierra de Famatina who is the highest summit who doesn't belong to the Andes. Inbetween the wind is broken by nothing. Sometimes I had to sit down and hold firmly my backpack. I walked go and back from Famatina in 4 1/2 days, but I was already acclimated to altitude. Normally it takes much longer. This mountain is climbed very rarely, not every year.
