Pine Mountain (Appalachian Mountains) Climbing Notes

Shad J. Baker from UNITED STATES writes:

Pine Mountain is a sawtooth-type range, with rugged sandstone cliffs dotting most of this 120+ mile-long ridge. The mountain is traversed by the Pine Mountain Scenic Trail (foot-trail) and is accessible at Pound Gap (US 23), Letcher Gap (US 119), Carson Island Road (off KY 80 in Elkhorn City), the Little Shepherd Trail (KY 1679) and Kingdom Come State Park. The high point is Mayking Knob (3,274 ft.). The quickest access is via the Pine Mountain Trail or the Bad Branch State Nature Preserve and then the PMT.

The best seasons for climbing are April-June and Sept-November.

Lodging options include the Breaks Interstate Park (near Elkhorn City KY), Benham School House Inn (in Benham KY), and various hotels/motels in Whitesburg or Pikeville KY or Wise VA.

Best dining options include the Pine Mountain Grill, Summit City, Courthouse Cafe and Hillbillies BBQ in Whitesburg, KY.
