Mt. Baekdu(in Korean) or Mt. Changbai located on the North Korea/China border is the highest mountain in the Korean Peninsula and Manchria.(2744m) The mountain is a dormant volcano whose the latest eruption was 1702. Its name 'Baekdu' means 'White-headed'. Indeed, the summit is covered with white volcanic pumice and snow so it looks really white-headed. The mountain has a large caldera lake on the summit which name is Cheonji in Korean or Tianchi in Chinese. It is the origin of the major rivers of surrounding region the Yalu, the Songhua, the Duman, etc. There lives many endangered animal species Siberian tigers, Brown bears, Amur leopards, Mountain antelopes, Baekdusan deer, etc. The mountain is the spiritual homeland for all Koreans living in two Koreas and Manchuria. All Koreans believe that the founding father of the Korean nation, Dangun Wanggeom, performed sacrifice rites on the summit about 4300 years ago and they are originated from the mountain. Many tribes of Manchuria and the Chinese dynasties Jin and Qing originated from Manchuria also regard Mt. Baekdu as a sanctuary. All available trekking routes are from China. Generally, North Korean routes are not allowed. Everyone can reach the summit easily on foot or by car. Most of them are South Koreans who want to see Lake Cheonji and surrounding peaks, the origin of their patriotism.
