The Matanuska Peak (6119') properly known as Byer's Peak is a pleasant though strenous hike. A well established and maintained trail about 4.5 miles long ascends McRoberts creek skirting Lazy Mountain. The trail is fairly steep (20-25%) and a challenge in snowshoes, culminating in a scramble to the summit. From the peak the glaciation on the Matanuska, Marcaus Baker and Goode mountains is spectacular. For experienced glacier climbers ascending the peak from Matanuska glacier can be quite a challenge.Despite the relatively low altitude these are very steep, vaulted mountains rising abruptly from near sea level. Technical climbs can be made in the area especially the southern knife ridge.
