Cairnsmore of Carsphairn Climbing Notes

Tony/Ted from UNITED KINGDOM writes:

24th April 2022. Parked just outside of Carsphairn on A713 opposite Bridge end farm. There is room for several cars. The ascent starts at the core path sign on the opposite side of the road from the parking area and leads for some distance through farm land which is currently being planted with trees on a massive scale.
I would estimate that 2/3rds of the walk are on track which has been laid with stone for machine access for tree planting. This was quite hard on the feet even with stout walking boots and my son and I found this part of the walk rather uninspiring though the view of the summit of Carsphairn helped keep our spirits up.
The track eventually leaves the made up road and starts to climb quite steeply. This part of the climb was quite boggy underfoot to start with but dries out as the feint track meanders through rocky grassland. Make sure to keep the stone dyke on your left as you ascend and you can't go wrong.
The summit is reached after some quite steep climbing. This particular day was dry but winds at the top were 45-50 mph and prevented us from doing much other than taking a few quick snaps of the views which by the way are absolutely stunning.
We left the summit to the right of where we ascended following a post and wire fence via Black shoulder and Dunool. After Dunool the descent becomes very steep and trekking poles assisted with keeping us upright. At one point before reaching Willieanna we had to leg it over a new fence to keep from walking through tussocky grass. This eventually led us back to the ascent track and to the car park.
As said, not the most inspiring walk but worth it for the views and bagging another hill!
